How you define what Internet Marketing is depends on who you ask. However most definitions will share at least the same ‘core definition’ of the practice, which is that for an internet based business, the focus is largely on direct marketing with an emphasis on permission based systems.

Once this is done, and it will not be achieved instantly, the next step for businesses wishing to build success online will be to seek to establish a relationship with their potential customers with a view to converting them further down the funnel, rather than trying to convert them immediately. More often than not this will involve some form of reciprocal arrangement, where the visitor gives their contact details in return for something of value to them.
Getting one’s business to the top of the organic listings – or at least to the front page a search engine like Google is known as Search Engine Optimisation ; a critical part of internet SEO can be done by businesses of any size and there are a plethora of free tools to help increase the odds on getting a site listed on page 1 of Google. However SEO done well is a long term strategy and should be regarded as such. Using sensible practices of SEO will improve the effectiveness of this process, particularly when it comes to converting sales and also when advertising using Google’s adwords.
